Silk Road Teacher Development Workshop

January 04, 2016

A K-12 teacher workshop was held by PAAC and the East-West Center Arts Program on October 24th. 30 teachers from elementary, middle and high schools spent an intensive day learning about the Silk Road and its curricular connections to social studies, science, art, and music. There were content speakers who explained the historic and economic importance of the route; curriculum lesson demonstrations that teachers could adapt for their classes; a hands-on indigo dyeing experience at the Lyon Arboretum; and a mini-concert by UH musicians featuring silk road instruments. The teachers were very excited with the multi-disciplinary approach to exploring the Silk Road. In the evaluations, the teachers expressed that they would be able to take their new knowledge back to their classroom. The workshop was made possible by a generous donation from Richard Cox to the East West Center Arts Program.
