Call for Volunteers: Academic Worldquest Coaches

Are you interested in being a part of shaping the futures of young leaders in Hawai’i?

Are you passionate about global peace and sustainability?

If so, we encourage you to take on this exciting volunteer opportunity for the upcoming year! PAAC is currently recruiting 6-12 graduate students or young professionals across all disciplines to participate as coaches for the local 2024-2025 Regional Academic WorldQuest Competition

The Academic WorldQuest Competition is a global trivia competition for high school students. In teams of four, students across the state of Hawai’i test their International IQ for a chance to win a trip to Washington, D.C. and compete in the Academic WorldQuest National Competition. We are seeking graduate students and young professionals across all disciplines to participate as Coaches for this year’s student teams. The local categories for the competition are USA and Foreign Languages, Space and National Security, Music & Globalization, Indigenous Peacebuilding, Borders and Boundaries, & County Focus on Mexico. We welcome any volunteers who are knowledgeable in these topics and/or interested in learning more about these topics alongside our students!

Your role as a Coach for the competition will include the following responsibilities:

  • Attend a 1 hour virtual training session

  • Choose one content area & read materials provided in the study guide (example)

  • Create 10 questions for the local competition

  • Create 10-15 practice questions

  • Meet with student teams virtually for coaching sessions and in Jan/Feb 2025

  • Attend the Academic WorldQuest Competition in March 1, 2025

The total possible community service hours that a volunteer may accumulate through participation is up to 40-45 hours, contingent upon the amount of volunteers that sign up. The timeline of these responsibilities and the competition will run from late November 2024 to early March 2025. Volunteers will be expected to commit to the entirety of this timeline and will be approved for all accumulated community service hours at the conclusion of the competition.
